Dwayne Beck shows viewers a field border of switchgrass and big bluestem that has been planted along the perimeter of the Dakota Lakes property for 25 years. The reason for planting the native grass along the perimeter of the property is to divert prairie dogs or grasshoppers that may be entering the property. The unwelcome guests tend to be content to stop in the border area, thus avoiding the need to use additional control measures.

Beck says, “This is pretty close to a well-developed native soil.” As Beck digs up a sample, viewers will hear the breaking of roots that extend 6-7 ft. deep into the soil to extract moisture. “Native settlers talked about grasses as high as the back of a horse, which would be these types of grasses,” he says. “This is incredible soil structure. If you get a chance, smell the soil because it has a smell that is very unique to healthy soil.”
