"Berimbau" and "Consolaçao" belong to the Afro musical sphere of Brazilian music that has little to do with the more well-known Bossa Nova genre. Powell showed a strong commitment to this tradition and composed such songs as "Canto de Xango", "Yemanja", "Canto de Ossanha" and many more inspired by the Candomble, an African-originated religion. While on a musical journey to the more isolated parts of Brazil circa 1962 (mainly in the Bahia region, considered to possess the greatest African imprint in Brazil), he thoroughly studied and learned most of the rhythms associated with the Afro-Brazilian music; by Vinicius' words, at his return Baden was able to play all the different Samba styles (and there are many...).

As a result, in 1966, they entered studio CDB in Rio and recorded in three days' time (with the contribution of more than 20 musicians, among them the vocal quartet Quarteto em Cy) a studio album that would reshape Brazilian music for the years to come: "Os Afro-Sambas de Baden e Vinicius". The eight tracks recorded for this album plus "Berimbau", "Consolaçao" and "Samba da Bençao" have been widely recognized as the complete Afro-Sambas cycle of the Baden/Vinicius partnership.
