If a validation mechanism fails to reach consensus, a fork of a blockchain occurs. This usually happens when there is a dispute as to whether to introduce permanent changes to the protocol layer, for example to change the block size. The difference between a hard and soft fork is that the hard fork is incompatible with the former blockchain. A soft fork, on the other hand, is a backward compatible way of updating the blockchain.
