Being a big fan of the TV show friends, and in particular the character chandler Bing, I’ve watched a lot of Matthew Perry’s other work. And so, I thought it’d share this knowledge and offer you some thoughts on what’s worth watching, and what’s best to avoid. Also, I am a very harsh critic, so take everything I say with a pitch of salt.
The Odd Couple:
Isn’t great. Despite the two leads being Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon two very funny comedy actors, this just isn’t that fun. It’s a remake of the film and the play where two men who have opposite personalities live together in an apartment. Ones very clean, ones very messy, you get the idea. It did 3 season before getting cancelled, and I don’t think I even finish the first season. Yeah, it was disappointing and I don’t think it’s worth watching.
Go On:
Go on was alright, it had a strong surrounding cast, and tried to bring some depth and emotion to a light-hearted comedy. Matthew Perry plays a sports broadcaster who is pressured by his boss to join a support group because he can't move forward after the death of his wife. I think they balanced the humour and the tragedy quite well. It only got one season, and I wasn’t too sad when it got cancelled, but I think, if you’ve literally got nothing else to watch, maybe give it a go.
Mr Sunshine:
Mr Sunshine was actually created and often written by Matthew Perry himself, so there’s a lot of Matthew Perry styled humour in the show. It’s not hilarious, but it has its moments. Despite Oscar winner Alison Janney in the surrounding cast, the characters are all rather forgettable. Unless you are keen to explore Matthew Perry’s work as a writer, you can give this one a miss.
17 Again
I think 17 Again is good, I think it’s an enjoyable movie. Zac Efron does great, and it’s sweet. There’s nothing more than what’s on the surface, but that’s not a bad thing. Matthew Perry isn’t in the film that much, but he’s good in the bits he is in. It’s fun, it's very 2000s and I think it’s definitely worth watching if you need a light hearted fun movie where you don’t need to think too much.
The Triumph/The Ron Clarke story
This is actually surprisingly good. It’s a TV movie originally called The Ron Clarke Story, now called The Triumph, from 2006. Matthew Perry plays a small-town teacher relocates to one of the toughest classrooms in the country. It’s based on a true story, and I only watched it once and I while ago, but I remember really enjoying it. It’s no Dead Poets Society, but it’s not too far off it. Matthew Perry gives a very good performance too. It might have aged poorly, considering it came out in 2006, so maybe I should give it another watch. But I’d recommend it if you want to see Matthew Perry in a strong dramatic role. Plus it’s available for free on YouTube.
The Whole Nine Yards
The Whole Nine Yards is ok. I think action comedies are difficult to pull off and this one kind of succeeds? There are some funny moments, Matthew Perry does a lot of laugh out loud funny physical comedy in this movie. But that’s not that much more to praise this film for. Strong surrounding cast, but yeah, it’s fine. Probably not worth watching.
Studio 60
Now this, this is everything. Studio 60 on the sunset strip is without a doubt my favourite tv show Matthew Perry stars in aside from Friends. It’s one of my favourite shows full stop. It’s created and written by Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the west wing, The social network, The Newsroom. Studio 60 is a behind-the-scenes look at a fictional sketch-comedy television show. It’s a comedy drama and I love it. Unfortunately, I was in the minority, and the show was cancelled after just one season. Despite that, it’s definitely worth watching. It’s interesting characters in unique situation and the show touches on some more serious topics which gives the show more depth. Matthew Perry’s character in particular suffers with a drug addict. A storyline that comes across very authentically because both Matthew Perry and Aaron Sorkin have battled drug addicts. If you watch anything from this list, make it Studio 60. It’s a great performance by Matthew Perry in a world class show.
