Thanks for being here with us on the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel! The much anticipated Kawai ES120 is finally here, so if you’d like an in-depth review of this digital piano, you’ve come to the right place.
The ES120 has big shoes to fill as it replaces the beloved ES110, so we’re very excited to get into our review here.
Piano Sound
The ES120 is equipped with 192 note polyphony and a pair of newly reconfigured 10-watt speakers for a beefed-up 20 watts of power. They’ve also added tone ports which are delivering a significant amount of high-end detail.
The tone is very round with a surprising amount of richness and complexity in the mid-range, and part of this is due to an improved reverb engine.
The sound engine itself is once again the Harmonic Imaging (HI) engine, however, Kawai has added their fabled SK-EX concert grand sound, which is a high-quality 88-key stereo sample.
So, it’s quite clear that the sound is improved over the ES110 largely due to the beefed-up speakers, tone ports, improved reverb engine and SKEX sample. The mid-range in particular is probably the most impressive aspect of the sound.
Piano Action
Kawai brings back the RHC action here, however, this is an improved version of the action as Kawai has enhanced the key cushioning and the reinforcement under the keybed. The result is an action that will be more durable over a longer period of time, with reduced key noise.
The ES110 ultimately attracted more high-end players than Kawai anticipated due to its great sound, so the improvement to the action here is definitely a nod to that as this new version of the RHC will hold up better to more rigorous use.
You could feel the keybed flex on the ES110 when doing heavier playing, but that’s not at all the case here.
Features/Connectivity
When we get into other features, the ES120 is largely the same as the ES110, however, the user interface has been dramatically improved. They’ve expanded the number of buttons and reduced the instances where key and button combinations are required to perform various actions, though some time with the owner’s manual is still required.
Even aesthetically the ES120 is much more up-to-date and really feels like a super modern digital piano.
Things like a metronome, transpose, dual, split etc. are all present once again, though we would recommend linking up with Kawai’s PianoRemote app for navigating these functions.
In terms of connectivity, Bluetooth Audio has been added which is very nice to see, especially at this price point. Bluetooth MIDI, USB to Host, dual headphone outputs and ¼” line outputs all make a return as well.
Closing Thoughts
The ES120’s combination of the improved action paired with the improved overall sound presentation delivers an extraordinary acoustic piano playing experience for a piano in this price range.
Navigating the 120 is great, and the added Bluetooth Audio is a very nice touch. The price has been increased relative to the ES110, but given the improvements and effects of inflation, this shouldn’t be too surprising.
Overall, the ES120 is set to compete for the top spot in the class admirably replacing the ES110.
