How might a parent's trauma shape a child’s development?

New research from M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology student Kayla Bissell investigates how a parent’s history of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—such as abuse, neglect, and exposure to substance use—can affect a child’s early development.

With 26% of U.S. children experiencing trauma before age four, Bissell’s study explores whether higher maternal ACE scores are linked to delays in language development, emotional regulation, and social communication.

Through a systematic literature review, Kayla investigated whether higher maternal ACE scores correlate with poorer child language outcomes and found compelling evidence that they do. Her research highlights the critical role of early intervention and developmental screening in identifying at-risk children and offering timely support.

"Healing is possible. By addressing trauma, building support networks, and fostering safe, nurturing environments, we can help break the cycle," Kayla said. "Because every child deserves a strong start—and that begins with supporting their caregivers."

Kayla will present her research at the 2025 Katz School Symposium on Science, Technology, and Health.
