Badalgachi Upazila is an upazila of Naogaon district of Bangladesh which consists of 8 unions . It is the smallest of the 11 upazilas of Naogaon district under Rajshahi division and is located north of Naogaon district headquarters. Badalgachi Upazila is bounded by Dhamirhat Upazila and Sadar Upazila of Jaipurhat district to the north, Naogaon Sadar Upazila to the south , Mahadevpur Upazila and Patnitala Upazila to the west , and Akkelpur Upazila and Naogaon Sadar Upazila of Jaipurhat district to the east. A river named Chota Yamuna flows over Badalgachi .
It is known about the history of naming Badalgashi, before the introduction of currency system, during the period of barter system, people used to exchange their necessary goods at a place called Badalgashi. As a place of exchange of goods, it has been named Badalgachi over time. [10]
During the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence , Pakistan Army occupied Naogaon on April 22 . Atwar Rahman Talukdar (MNA) was assigned the responsibility of Badalgachi police station with the initiative of Sarvadlia Sangram Parishad to resist and defeat the invading forces of Pakistan . [11] During the liberation war, on October 15, under the leadership of freedom fighter Md. Jalal Hossain Chowdhury, many Pak army and two freedom fighters were killed in a frontal battle between the freedom fighters and the Pak forces at a place called Kola Bhandarpur of Badalgachi police station. [12] In addition, the Pak army set fire to many houses and killed many people in areas called Kola, Bhandarpur, Mithapur, Baluvra. In addition , the invading forces committed massacres near Paharpur village in Sompur Bihar .[13] Badalgachi was declared a free zone on 18 December 1971.
