The fasting month of Ramadan began on Friday, turning several old towns into open buffet street restaurants.

The smell of freshly prepared food fills the air at Chawk Bazaar and other makeshift iftar kiosks.

On the first day of Ramadan, stalls in Chaw Bazar and other parts of old Dhaka were packed with customers waiting for traditional Mughlai dishes. Foodies flock here to shop for traditional and specialty products that are rare in other parts of the capital.

In Chawbazar, vendors sell a variety of iftar products in makeshift shops.These include "borobaperpolaikhai" (mixture of chickpea, minced meat, potato, chira, egg, chicken, 13 kinds of spices and ghee), shahijilapi, shahiparatha, beef, chicken, mutton, pigeon, fried quail, keema roll, keemaparatha, doi bora, Bohani.

The unique variety of kebabs attracts food lovers from all over the world, reminding them of Mughal life through a variety of menus featuring tikka, shutli, jaali, shami, irani and other types of kebabs.

Fasting citizens snapped up these traditional iftar dishes on the first day of the holy month with added fervor as it was also the day of Juma prayers.

As of Friday afternoon, vendors in Chawk Bazar and other parts of the Old City have started setting up their stalls with a wide range of Ramdan delicacies. The crowds increased as the day progressed.

Though rising commodity prices are making consumers dizzy, the festive atmosphere and the sacred feeling of breaking an all-day fast with friends and family make this 400-year-old part of town a vibrant place for thousands of Muslims
