Jaishankar Putin Meeting: Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday, reaffirming the strength of India–Russia ties amid escalating U.S. pressure and tariff penalties imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration. The talks followed Jaishankar’s meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, where he sharply questioned Washington’s logic for penalising India over oil imports from Russia, pointing out that the U.S. itself had long encouraged India to stabilise energy markets. The U.S. recently imposed 25% tariffs on Indian exports, with another 25% “penalty” set to follow, citing India’s surge in Russian oil imports. Washington claims India has “profiteered” by reselling Russian crude — while China, the largest buyer, has not faced similar measures. Amid this pressure, India has doubled down on Moscow, with Jaishankar describing Indo–Russian relations as among the “steadiest of major partnerships since World War II.” His trip also saw him co-chair the India–Russia Inter-Governmental Commission and address the Business Forum.
