लिवर सिरोसिस का एक important complication - portal hypertension है जिसमें शरीर के अंदर कई जगहों पर (जैसे पेट, अन्न नलिका, नाभि, और लैट्रिन की जगह पर) नई- नई नसें बन जाती हैं जो ब्लड को लिवर से bypass करके हार्ट तक ले जाती हैं। इन नसों को varix कहा जाता है ।

चूँकि ये नई नसें कमज़ोर होती हैं और इनके अंदर ब्लड का प्रेशर बहुत ज़्यादा होता है इसलिए इन नसों के फटने का रिस्क होता है । अगर गले में मौजूद varices फटेंगी तो इसकी वजह से पेशेंट्स को खून की उल्टी (hemetemesis) या काले रंग की लैट्रिन (melena) हो सकती है ।
