Every time I listen to or sing this aria, the words of Giulio Caccini come to mind: "Parlar cantando", or speaking-as-we-sing, which explains the way Italian poems were recited from 1300 to 1600 approximately, and it has to do not only with a performance technique, but with the psychic way Italians 'felt' the power of poetry through reciting, or in the case of a vocalist, through singing. It was about what triggered the delivery of the artistic impulse. Let's say, it was the way these Italian artists from the Renaissance and early baroque understood and felt the art of communication through poetry.

This is exactly how I feel the performance of this aria: I am in such a trance that sometimes I don't know if I am speaking or singing what the heart is experiencing, and the treatment of the voice has to be so intimate, sincere and subtle that the message is absolutely clear, both emotionally and instrumentally (diction, expression and vocal production). What an honor to be part of the process of bringing this work to life.

Out of the twenty children (arias) on this album, my very favorite one is ´Intorno all'idol mio' not only because this composition is absolutely sublime from every point of view, musically and artistically, but because its poem anchors itself straight in the middle of my soul and the way Marc'Antonio Cesti set it into music perfectly translates, according to my experience, the psychological state of the character.

This aria expresses the human experience of 'distance'. A soul longs to reunite with the beloved, this union, not being possible, propels the lover to ask the subtle winds to gently touch her/him on his/her behalf, and to reveal his secret love for him/her as the only way to make contact is via the intention of love.

Sometimes, being away from a person we deeply love can be profoundly painful, especially if there is a true bond.
Sometimes destiny decides to set two souls apart distancing their bodies whether it is with a physical detachment or whether the separation comes when one of the lovers ceases to exist. The beauty and depth of the poetry in this aria are precisely what sets it apart for me, it shows how sublime love can become under such hard circumstances and reveals the quality of the human psyche as we deal with it.

The Italian language and psyche (through poetry in this case) has a very unique way to pay tribute to this human experience, and I have rarely witness a poem united to its perfect music counterpart which depicts this spiritual dynamics so profoundly and so clearly.

From the singer's perspective this aria is a gift for the devoted artists. The long phrases supported by the most brilliant harmonic fabric allows for the voice to become different instruments depending on the vocal texture and the emotional message. As I listened to the final master of this recording I was delighted to discover that all the baroque music that I have devoured throughout my musical life emerged here and there as the aria flows forward. I hear the colors of the oboe, of the cello, of the flute and even the viola. It is nearly impossible to verbalize the sensations, dimensions and pleasure that any singer can go through as we participate in making music of this caliber.
Who knows how many hidden treasures are yet to be unearthed and enjoyed by humanity?
