I stood outside the house a few weeks ago. The sun was alive in its birth, aglow, crawling up the sky. The chatter of birds was alive too; birds of all denominations roost atop trees in our compound.
There was no noise. You learn that when birds whistle their music; you get swept in.

I remember this: I was seeing the morning for the first time; you know when you have fallen in love and the days, and the house appear new? Here I was, swept up in the magic. It was something close to an epiphany. I was new. It was a dream. The compound, the trees, the tinkling of old decorated bottles tied up in the branches; the timeless music of the birds, the dew.

I was seeing it for the first time. I had seen this countless times.


See, if you had asked me five, six years ago what I hoped to have accomplished, the answer would have been a tad scattered, even scanty. Sure I had the blueprint, the vision but as I stood there that morning, I knew that this idea, this project-Tũrĩ A Mũmbi, could have only have been drawn up with Ngai, our Creator holding the pencil. Five years on, here we are,

Five years.

The idea was to create a space where people could feel themselves whole again, a place to learn about the culture and norms of the Agĩkũyũ; a place that would evoke the yearning, the longing in all of us to dig around the loam of our past, to be woke; an authentic place, and a beautiful one. In the dream there would be music, classes, books too, and an embrace of all what we are.

It wasn’t easy: there were times I felt that this dream of ours was too big, too daunting: scouring for collectibles, other materials, trinkets. But over time, the idea, like the sun rising up east, we gathered warmth.

Five years.

And where would we be without all our wonderful followers: children romping in the compound, living and learning about their history. We are family, and nothing brings us more joy than this sound of people laughing, kids squealing with joy.

We are music. We are together. We are now.

The future is brilliant. And we are in this dream.
