"Nane Nane" Protests: Kenyan Activists Tear-gassed, Arrested For Anti-Govt Rallies | Firstpost Africa

Sporadic rallies erupted on Thursday as small groups of protesters gathered in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. The protests were dubbed 'Nane Nane', which in Swahili means "Eight Eight" and signifies the date- the eighth of August. Protesters demanded better governance in Kenya with many chanting slogans for President William Ruto to resign. Kenyan police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters across Nairobi's financial district. 174 arrests were made across the country including 126 in Nairobi. At least 60 people have been killed in the protests that started in June initially against the planned tax hikes but spiralled into a campaign against the government.
