World War 1 (1914–1918) was the first great tragedy of the twentieth century that changed the course of history forever.
It all began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, but soon the entire world was dragged into a war of unimaginable destruction.

Trench warfare, deadly new technology, poisonous gas attacks, tanks, and airplanes turned battlefields into hell. Millions of soldiers from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East were forced into this global conflict.

By the end of the war, four great empires had collapsed, over 20 million lives were lost, and the political map of the world was reshaped. Most importantly, the seeds of the Second World War were sown.
