In 1989, Daniel Rakowitz, then 28 years old, was arrested for the brutal murder of Monika Beerle, a 26-year-old Swiss dance student and his roommate in New York City's East Village. The two had a volatile relationship, and Rakowitz became enraged when Beerle asked him to move out of their shared apartment.

During an argument, Rakowitz punched Beerle in the throat, causing her to collapse and die from asphyxiation. After realizing she was dead, he dismembered her body in their bathtub and allegedly boiled parts of her remains into a soup, which he later claimed to have served to homeless people in Tompkins Square Park.

Rakowitz bragged about the murder to multiple people, even showing a friend a bucket containing her skull and bones. This led to his arrest. In 1991, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and confined to Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center in New York.

In 2004, a jury ruled that although he was no longer considered dangerous, he remained mentally ill and required continued institutionalization. As of 2025, Rakowitz is still confined at Kirby, with no significant updates on his status. His case remains one of New York’s most disturbing true crime stories, often referred to as The Butcher of Tompkins Square Park.
