Alberta's Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen and Alberta Wildfire information unit manager Christie Tucker provided an update as an out-of-control wildfire burning near Fort McMurray forced forced thousands of people out of their homes.

Tucker said That the Fort McMurray wildfire did not grow overnight and that rain is expected. It moved slightly to the northwest and remained about 5.5 kilometres from Fort McMurray limits.

As the May Long Weekend approaches, officials encouraged campers to check the provincial park or recreation area for active fire bans, restrictions or advisories, and properly extinguish cooking fire.

Several neighbourhoods in Fort McMurray remain under an evacuation order. So far, about 6,600 people have been forced to leave their homes and have been advised they will likely not be allowed to return until at least Tuesday. That re-entry date could be extended.
