On Saturday, April 12, 2025, the 16th edition of the Peringatan Ride Out took place. This annual motorcycle procession commemorates the execution of former RMS president Christiaan Soumokil on April 12, 1966, and honors the ongoing struggle for the independence of the South Moluccas.

The Peringatan Ride Out is an annual motorcycle procession in the Netherlands that commemorates the declaration of the Republic of South Maluku (Republik Maluku Selatan, RMS) on April 25, 1950. This event serves both as a cultural celebration and a political statement, aiming to honor Maluku’s history, preserve its cultural identity, and advocate for the rights of political prisoners in Indonesia.

Purpose and Significance

Organized by groups such as Persatuan Anak Kumpulan (PAK), the ride honors the Maluku heroes who proclaimed the RMS. It also raises awareness about ongoing issues affecting the Maluku community, including the plight of political prisoners in Indonesia. Participants often wear traditional Maluku attire and display RMS flags, reinforcing their cultural heritage and political aspirations. Funds collected during the event support the families of political prisoners and help sustain Maluku community initiatives.

In this vlog, I take you along the route from Dordrecht, to the final destination in Krimpen aan den IJssel. Along the way, you’ll see impressive footage of roaring motorcycles, Moluccan flags, and the warm receptions in Moluccan neighborhoods.

A special mention goes to Sahabat Maluku, the organization that led the ride out and ensured a safe and smooth journey. Their volunteers took on the crucial role of guiding the procession and temporarily blocking intersections, allowing the group of approximately 800 motorcyclists to pass safely and uninterrupted. Their dedication and coordination were essential to the success of this event.

The Peringatan Ride Out is not only a commemoration but also a moment of solidarity and awareness. During the ride, funds are raised for the families of political prisoners, and attention is drawn to the human rights situation in the Moluccas.
