The Black Hills. South Dakota is known for it's vast prairies, plains, and flatlands, but in the southwest corner is a mountain chain full of unique and scenic hills and highlands. Black Elk Peak is the highest point in the black hills and also the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains, which is impressive since it battles the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and the rest of the Appalachians further east. Known most famously for the National Monument Mt Rushmore the black hills are home to the Wind Cave National Park - a 22 mile of cave system that serves as the birth place of the Lakota Nation. The entire region holds history from both parts of the American History. From the Lakota origin point to the famous assassination attempt of Wild Bill Hickok in DeadWood, and the famous Motorcycle rally in Sturgis. And more importantly from the early days of the nation to the finding of gold and the rush that followed after, the Black Hills are a world of their own beyond its mountain scenery.
