This week Toby and I are taking you Northeast into the Arrowhead region of Minnesota's Superior National Forest. I had no idea what to expect as far as occupied campsites. With the sweltering heat, oppressive humidity, constant rain and blood thirsty Mosquitos I was hoping people would be staying indoors, but that was not the case. I spent about 8 hours Friday driving around trying to find a spot. I had another doctor's appointment Friday morning for the shoulder, so I took the entire day off work. It was nice to have an extra day knowing that I was going to be putting on a lot of miles.
Friday evening as the sun was going down, I found myself on a trail that I should not have been down. It was extremely tight. I could tell no one had been down the trail in a long time. The only reason I kept pushing through is because the ground was hard packed. Eventually I came to a spot that was completely washed out and I was forced drive the trail in reverse for a mile or more.
I decided to check a few more spots before giving up for the night. I'm not as familiar with the Superior National Forest as I am the Chippawa National Forest. I didn't want to be down these sketchy washed-out backwoods trails at midnight looking for a campsite. When I pulled up to the Windy Lake Rustic Campsite, I was shocked to find it empty.
I hope you enjoy following along with me and Toby this weekend. Saturday was a lazy day because of a 5-hour rain shower right in the middle of the day. But in all honesty, I enjoyed the down time. I hope the relaxing nature of the adventure comes through in this video.
