I'm doing an internship with an electric utility company and I got to watch a safety demonstration put on for a lineman training class. Video can never do an arc flash justice. When you're actually there, you feel the intense heat, blinding light, and blast even from inside the control room. The purpose is to show the lineman that the lower voltages they work with can also be extremely dangerous. They wired together (shorted) the terminals in a 3 phase 480 volt meter panel and then energized 12 kV side of the transformer supplying the panel. The supply has a fault capability of 30,000 amps. The test was limited to half a second. If you look closely to the right of the rightmost guys hardhat, you can see the cables jump away from each other due to the high current and resulting magnetic fields. If the test was not time limited, the arc would continue, causing damage to the source.
