Statistical sciences play a critically important role in a society that is rapidly increasing dependence on data science for advancement and decision making. Including statistical scientists at the beginning of research activities in fields as varied as astrophysics, wastewater management, natural disaster prediction and more, will lead to better collaboration and solutions and scientific discoveries that would not otherwise be possible.

This is the mission of the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute, or CANSSI - a national institute that develops and operates cutting edge programs across Canada to support collaborative research involving statistical sciences and apply statistics to the benefit of society. Research is driven by Canadian statisticians, and all programs originate in requests and suggestions from the community.

Collaboration can be difficult, so it’s essential that groups have the support they need to make progress. CANSSI’s goal is to support research groups in overcoming gulfs in discipline, geography, career stage and many other factors, rigorously assessing progress to assure all projects and the funding behind them make an impact.

CANSSI is involved in a wide diversity of research topics, with statisticians working with experts in a number of fields as co-leads - to ensure research is built from the ground up with the benefit of statistical expertise.

On the CHIME project, researchers from the fields of statistics and astronomy are working to better understand Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), one of the most enigmatic objects in modern astronomy. Another team is asking whether Canadian insurers are ready for the next big natural disaster, looking at insurance risk management, stress testing, and solvency capital requirements. Researchers are also looking at wastewater-based surveillance - using statistical methods to monitor infectious disease in populations.

Alongside these hugely impactful areas of research, CANSSI is also working more directly with communities on specific areas of research for social good. One project measures the impact of climate change on lung health by monitoring air quality and changes in health amongst marginalised communities in Nova Scotia.
