This Hike is a straight-up hike from the trailhead of the Pian De La Velma to the Rifugio Carducci on Trail # 103 through the Val Giralba.


Trip total: Approx. 5.5 mi, 4,564 ft elevation gain.

Hike Notes
We spent five nights at Rifugio Carducci which we essentially used as a "base camp" for hiking in the high Alpine of the Dolomiti di Sesto. This video is about the hike to the Rifugio from the town of Auronzo di Cadore (Giralba), deep down in the Valley. It was an "approach" hike, but indeed a beautiful hike in its own right through an ever changing landscape from the valley floor, the woods of beech trees, across the drainage of the Giralba creek, then through pine forest and finally up in the high Alpine landscape above the tree line surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Rifugio settings.
The hike is relatively short in mileage but it is not to be underestimated as the elevation gain is relevant (4,564 ft) and the trail is relentlessly up hill and steep in some sections. Not a difficult trail, just significant elevation gain.

We truly loved the time spent at the Carducci. Beppi Monti and his group are great hosts and we really enjoyed their company and the time spent there. Overall, we were not very lucky with the weather, but the great vibe at the rifugio totally made up for it.
The great food was certainly another high note - The Canederli all'Ortica are not to be missed! All other dishes were great too.

Beppi stewardship of the Rifugio is not only very admirable but it is also great value to this part of the Dolomites mountains and the local community. He has done a very remarkable work. Kudos.
