Members of the Iranian American community held a vigil near the White House on Friday to honor Iranians killed during recent nationwide protests and to condemn Iran’s ruling authorities.

Organizers said the vigil aimed to keep international pressure on Tehran and called for the release of political prisoners. The protests, which erupted in late December over economic hardship, expanded into calls for an end to clerical rule and were met with a deadly crackdown.

Opposition groups and Iranian officials estimate that more than 2,000 people were killed in the unrest, the deadliest since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
