Cory Fox, Olympic College Resource Center Program Manager, is part of Olympic College’s strategic plan to address food insecurity among OC students. She was our guest at the Kitsap League of Women Voters Bremerton/Central Kitsap unit meeting on June 21st and shared her role addressing food insecurity and providing basic needs for college students.

The Washington State Legislature passed RCW 28B.10.935 to require institutions of high learning to develop a hunger-free and basic needs campus strategic plan by April 1, 2024. This was based on a 2022 survey of students at 39 Washington State colleges and universities. The survey found that, “[N]early half of all students in all regions of the state experienced some type of basic needs insecurity… Addressing basic needs challenges for students contributes to their ability to remain enrolled and pursue their educational goals…When students received this assistance, an average of 88 percent of them were able to persist in their programs” (Findings—Intent—2023 c 421).

The Olympic College Resource Center offers more than food assistance. At the Olympic College Resource Center, they offer students information and referrals, supportive listening, classroom items like the book lending library, and when applicable, emergency funding to help support students needs. This program was created by students for students. Stop in, call, or email and see if the Resource Center can help; you don’t have to struggle alone.
