Serval. The French foreign legion's role in saving Mali in 2013.

Operation Serval was a military operation carried out in Mali by the French Army . Launched in January 2013 and carried out within the framework of the military intervention in Mali , it ended in July 2014 when the forces engaged in the country join a regional system: Operation Barkhane .

The operation aimed to support Malian troops seeking to repel an offensive by Islamist armed groups that have taken control of Azawad , the northern part of the country. The aims of this intervention as expressed by the French President , François Hollande January 15 , 2013 are to stop the advance towards Bamako of jihadist forces, secure the capital of Mali and allow the country to recover its territorial integrity.
This intervention saw participation from the 2nd REP and 1st REC of the French Foreign Legion, both playing a major role in controlling rebel forces.

Whether it was from the field hospital or the soldiers who captured the airport to the jump masters, everyone was striving for the same goal.
Two hundred soldiers of the 21st RIMa taken from the Epervier Ops , based in Chad as well as a platoon of legionnaires from the 1er REC of Orange.
In mainland France, the legionnaires of the 2nd REP who are on alert guépard (Cheetah) are put on alert on January 11. They form a parachute group with HQ staff, the 2nd company reinforced with an anti-tank section (SAC), and a group of commando-paratroopers GCP.

The 3rd Company of the REP is put on alert on it's return to Libreville (Gabon) and will join the regiment in the Ifoghas for the second phase of the operation.

L'opération Serval était une opération militaire menée au Mali par l'armée française. Lancée en janvier 2013 et menée dans le cadre de l'intervention militaire au Mali, elle s'achève en juillet 2014 lorsque les forces engagées dans le pays rejoignent un dispositif régional : l'opération Barkhane.

L'opération visait à soutenir les troupes maliennes cherchant à repousser une offensive des groupes armés islamistes qui ont pris le contrôle de l'Azawad, la partie nord du pays. Les objectifs de cette intervention telle qu'exprimée par le président français François Hollande le 15 janvier 2013 sont de stopper l'avancée vers Bamako des forces djihadistes, de sécuriser la capitale du Mali et de permettre au pays de recouvrer son intégrité territoriale.
Bien sûr, le REP a joué un grand rôle dans l'opération,

Que ce soit de l'hôpital de campagne ou des soldats qui ont capturé l'aéroport aux maîtres de saut, tout le monde s'efforçait d'atteindre le même objectif.
Deux cents soldats du 21e RIMa issus de l'Ops Epervier, basés au Tchad ainsi qu'un peloton de légionnaires du 1er REC d'Orange.
En France métropolitaine, les légionnaires du 2e REP qui sont en alerte guépard (Cheetah) sont mis en alerte le 11 janvier. Ils forment un groupe de parachutistes avec l'état-major, la 2e compagnie renforcée d'une section antichar (SAC), et un groupe de commando-parachutistes GCP.
