The buttonhole bar is used traditionally in the sewing world. As the name suggests, it is meant to hold buttons in place. Usually you would use buttonhole silk thread for this to make it as durable as possible. The constant stress on the thread caused by the button makes it necessary to use strong threads.
However, if you use this stitch for decorative purposes like flower petals, you can use regular embroidery floss.
