"Abdul Haq, he was a freedom fighter, a general during the time of the Soviet presence in Afghanistan. He was a prominent fighter then. But then, in whatever activities going on subsequently after that, he didn't have, he was abroad, and he didn't have much of a role to play in Afghanistan. I do not think at all that his not being on the scene will have any effect whatsoever on the political dispensation that one would like to have futuristically in Afghanistan because whatever is going on, whatever the ethnic groupings, and the power struggle, the power equations in Afghanistan, he did not feature much in any one of them. So therefore the political strategy or political dispensation in Afghanistan, I don't think will get affected by his not being there."

"I expressed this morning and also here now our sympathy with Pakistan and the people of Pakistan for their courageous and clear support for the international coalition in return to the dramatic events on the United States on the eleventh of September. We all know that this struggle is important, the struggle against terrorism, that the components clearly have to be distinguished form each other, military components, military actions, targeted factors, and supported as everybody knows also by the Netherlands as a NATO member and member of the European Union."

"We need some patience here because of persistence and consistency. Of course there are questions all over the world about casualties and about civil victims. And these questions arise in every society, your society and also in my country. And public opinion is extremely aware of what is going on, and sometimes also for good reasons extremely critical in following the process. But that does not limit the amount of solidarity with the main purposes and the way in which the military actions are pursued."

"Well, I think it has really been me who has been saying that it should be short and targeted. And I would like to explain there are two parts. Short, yes, I still maintain that it ought to be short because any prolonging of the operation is not in the interests of anybody, not even the United States. But however, one does understand, that short is directly related to the attainment of objectives set by the military operation. So one can't really define time periods for it. One can only hope and wish that the military objectives are achieved and it remains as short as possible."

STORYLINE:
Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok met with Pakistani President, General Pervez Musharraf in Islamabad on Saturday to discuss the events unfolding in Afghanistan.
At a joint news conference, Kok told the media his country's "sympathy with the people of Pakistan for their courageous and clear support for the international coalition" currently efforting a fight against terrorism.
Part of this involves the U-S led air strikes in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Meantime, General Pervez Musharraf said he expected the execution of Afghan opposition leader Adbul Haq by the Taliban would have little impact on the future of the war torn country.
