Babamunini Francis - Hatisi Tose (Cover)

In this video, I bring you a “two-in-one”… a medley of two songs by The Bhundu Boys. Babamunini Francis and Hatisi Tose were a big part of the soundtrack of my childhood. I remember teasing my aunt whose name is Chipo using the lyrics of Hatisi Tose. It says, “when you get home, please tell the parents, uncle and my friends that Chipo and I are no longer together. I loved Chipo and she loved me too… but she took all her belongings and the kids and left. I don’t know where we went wrong. I don’t know what I did wrong… I’ve forgotten!”. The first song in the medley talks about “Uncle Francis”. It says, “my wife, in my family, I am the only boy child… the rest are girls. So who’s this Uncle Francis that our child talks about who only comes around when I’m not around?”.

I love Jiti music. Jiti music is party music… I recall in my younger days going home to the rural areas where youths would spend all night around a fire, singing and dancing to the drum. Us city kids were not used to the smoke from the fire, it would make our eyes tear up. The rural kids would make fun of us for being ‘soft’ but it was all in good cheer. These were scenes full of joy and vitality. I hope this medley brings you all the same joy and vitality.
