This seminar presented by the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation features speakers Lee Green, M.D., M.P.H., an emeritus professor of family medicine at the U-M Medical School who is now a professor at the University of Calgary, and Terrence McDonald, M.D., assistant professor in the departments of family medicine and community health sciences at the University of Calgary.

Family physicians in Alberta, Canada predominantly practice in a fee-for-service payment model. Still, the province has made strides toward its version of a Medical Home or Team-Based Care, called Primary Care Networks. Nonetheless, with fluctuations in governmental support and gaps in physician supply, the province’s primary care is in a precarious state. Dr. Lee and Dr. McDonald speak to how their collaborative research efforts support a path forward for primary care in Alberta, including the measurement of family physician workforce supply, insights from cognitive task analysis, and consideration of alternative payment models.
