The potential extraction of deep-sea minerals and metals and largely unassessed impacts on deep-sea ecosystems present a complex challenge at the intersection of environmental conservation, technological innovation, and economic development. Understanding the ecological and socio-economic impact of resource extraction from the deep sea based on scientific evidence is crucial, as interest in this topic and public awareness grows.UNEP facilitates evidence-based dialogue among stakeholders. With its role in keeping the environment under review and protecting marine ecosystems, UNEP facilitates evidence-based dialogue and knowledge sharing on this complex issue to bridge science and policy. UNEA resolution 6/5 on environmental aspects of minerals and metals requests UNEP to strengthen cooperation with relevant international organizations on environmental aspects of minerals and metals. Coordination is ongoing bodies like the International Seabed Authority (ISA), whose mandate is to regulate deep sea-mining in the Area Beyond National Jurisdiction for the benefit of humankind.This side event will provide a platform to explore the potential risks, existing evidence and gaps, including related to emerging issues and technological developments, and identify the need for further research and collaboration to understand and address issues associated with deep-sea mining for informed action.Objectives and outcomesPromote evidence-based dialogue on deep-sea mining, highlighting environmental, social, and economic dimensions.Identify needs and opportunities to support science-policy linkages and evidence-based protection of ecosystems and communities.Foster partnership and coordination, including with ISA, and engage Member States, donors, and stakeholders to further understanding of deep-sea mining and potential impacts.Showcase videos developed by UNEP that analyze common narratives for informed decision making.Organizers and partnersThe event is organized by the Source to Sea Pollution Unit of UNEP, in coordination with the Chief Scientist’s Office, with speakers from relevant international, research, and civil society organizations.OrganizerWalid Passas
