Before the outbreak of war in 1914, Charles Hamilton Sorley spent a little over 6 months in Germany studying the language and culture. After Germany declared war on Russia, he was detained by German officials for an afternoon but was released the same day and told the leave the country immediately.

After returning to Britain, Sorley quickly volunteered for the British Army and arrived on the Western Front on 30th May 1915. He was killed in action on 13th October 1915, aged 20.

Sorley has no known grave and is commemorated on the CWGC Loos Memorial.

This is Sorley’s final poem, the manuscript of which was recovered from his kit after his death.
