From My Vault Series------In 1985 Australian National purchased, secondhand, 75 Trailer Train flat cars from TTX in the USA for their newly formed "The Westliner" trailer sevice to Perth. The cars arrived on the Happy Rider at Outer Harbour on 23/4/85. They were unloaded and quickly checked and formed into one train and moved to Pt Augusta or modifying. The brake system was not compatible with the Australian system, so this had to be modified and cars given a full overhaul and painted into AN colours.
The transfer movement was made at a maximum speed of 60KPH as there as no active brake system on the train.
In the AN roster they were known as AFIY. There was some concern from Western Australia that the back to back wheel profile would not be compatible with WA's dual gauge points, so new wheels were fitted to some and these were known as AFWY, the W indicated they were suitable for WA. Most of these cars have since been disposed of, as they were old and worn out beforse they arrived, some breaking their backs. Infomation suplied by Noel Potter.
