While visiting Lightning Ridge with Saxon, I laid eyes on a massive parcel of opal—worth close to one million dollars. It was filled with thick color bars and beautiful crystal material. The kind of opal that makes your heart race.
I couldn’t afford the whole thing (who has a spare million lying around?), but I did grab a single test piece from the edge of the parcel—just enough to see if this material lives up to the hype. It had great color, clean lines, and loads of potential. But as always with opal, what lies beneath the skin is what really matters.
Through slicing, shaping, and polishing, I discovered two color bars—one watery, the other stronger. One side looked average. The other? Much better. It became a lesson in clarity, formation, and just how different seam crystal opal can be from knobby crystal.
Was it beautiful? Yes.
Was it true crystal opal? Sort of.
Did it make a profit? Not even close. I paid $6,000, and I'll probably just get my money back.
But they are still nice gems
