The Paris Olympics produced a “Papa Smurf” tableau that was interpreted by many as a parody of Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” (In the previous video I discussed the misunderstanding of the Greek god Dionysus that this misunderstanding involved). In this video I examine the controversy caused by these two images in the light of Mattias Desmet’s book “The Psychology of Totalitarianism”.
I ask:
– to what extent are today’s widespread ideologies of “diversity” and identity politics an over-compensation for feelings of social anxiety?
can identity politics and the ideology of diversity be linked to new forms of social narcissism?
To what extent is the rise of social anxiety due to our immersion in digital images and our growing lack of literacy?
Has our culture lost the abilithy to deal with ambiguity and nuance?
