Nothing says Southern comfort food like a big pot of pinto beans, hot cornbread, and crispy fried potatoes. This is an old-fashioned country meal that’s budget-friendly, filling, and packed with flavor.
In this video, I’ll show you how we make our pinto beans just like grandma used to — slow-simmered and seasoned right — served with buttery cornbread and golden fried potatoes. If you love Southern cooking, country food, and comfort meals, you’re in the right place.

📝 Ingredients
1 lb dry pinto beans
6–8 cups water (or enough to cover beans by 2 inches)
2-3 meaty ham hock or 6–8 oz ham chunks or bacon
½–1 small onion, diced (about ½ cup)
garlic powder (to taste)
1 tsp salt (add after beans are cooked)
½ tsp black pepper
Optional: pinch of crushed red pepper or cayenne.

🍲 Directions
Sort & Rinse Beans
Pick through beans to remove debris. Rinse well under cold water.
Soak (Optional but Recommended)
Place beans in a large bowl, cover with water, and soak 6–8 hours or overnight in refrigerator.
(If skipping soak, just allow extra cooking time.)
Start Cooking
Add beans to a large pot. Cover with fresh water (2 inches above beans).
Add ham hock or meat and diced onion.
Simmer Low & Slow
Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low.
Cover and simmer 2½ to 3 hours or until beans are tender, stirring occasionally.
Season Properly
Once beans begin to soften, add salt, pepper and optional spices.
(Don’t salt too early — it can toughen beans.)
Finish
Beans are done when tender and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste.
👉 Serve with cornbread and fried potatoes.

🥔 Southern Fried Potatoes (Skillet Style)

📝 Ingredients
4–5 russet or Yukon gold potatoes
¼–⅓ cup oil, bacon grease, or a mix
½ small onion, sliced (optional)
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
Optional: garlic powder

🍳 Directions
Prep Potatoes
Peel or leave skins on. Slice into small wedges.
Rinse and pat dry thoroughly.
Heat Skillet
Heat oil or grease in a large cast iron skillet over medium heat.
Add Potatoes
Spread potatoes evenly in the skillet.
Do not stir for 4–5 minutes so they brown.
Flip & Season
Turn potatoes, sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Add onions if using.
Cook Until Golden
Continue cooking, flipping occasionally, for 15–20 minutes until tender and crispy.
Finish & Serve
Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve hot.
