(2 Mar 2015) The coldest February since 1940 has prevented many fisherman from venturing out in Portland, Maine
The Widgery Wharf fishing pier has seen lessened activity in the wake of the harsh weather, even with the U.S. Coast Guard's ice-cutting tug, Shackle breaking up ice in the wharf.
"I haven't seen any activity like in years past," said Ben Doughty, a local lobster buyer.
Fewer fishermen have been able to pursue key food fish such as haddock and pollock, which has cut into landings at the pier and lessened activity at the Portland Fish Exchange auction.
