This is a mechanical indexer that creates 30 degree ‘sudden’ rotations for every full rotation of the drive wheel. These were most commonly used in movie projectors to hold the frames in place- the ticking sound comes from the geneva mechanism!

In my case, this is actually part of a larger kinetic sculpture I’m currently working on- it’s a ping pong ball feeder that will feed one ball every time the motor make a full rotation.
