FORMULA
The representation of a molecule of a substance in terms of symbols and subscript numbers is known as formula.

METHOD TO WRITE A FORMULA (CRISS - CROSS METHOD)
1. write the positive ion in left and negative ion in right side.
2. put the valency number on each radical
3. divide the each valency by common dividing factor.
4.ignore the positive and negative sign
5.shift the valency numbers to lower right side of ion. if the ion/radical receives a number more than one, enclose it within brackets.

NAMING CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS FROM THEIR FORMULA
1.if compound contain only 2 elements, such that one of them is metal, the metal named first. non metallic part given suffix 'ide' at the end.
EX- NaCl - sodium chloride

2.if the compound contain 2 non metals, use prefix like mon, di, tri, tetra, penta, which denote the number of atom present in the compound.
EX- CO -carbon monoxide, CO2 - carbon di oxide

3.compounds containing 3 elements, one of which is oxygen are named with suffix -ate at the end.
if there are two compounds, the one with more oxygen is named with suffix -ate, another with less oxygen is named with suffix-ite.
ex- Na2SO4 -sodium sulphate
Na2SO3 - sodium sulphite
