The Vikings are often considered uncultured barbarians who were more interested in sacking cities than writing poetry. But despite this misconception, Norsemen did leave behind several records written with cryptic runes, still to be completely deciphered today. So why are runes so mysterious?

In Norse mythology, the god Odin pierced his heart with a spear and hung from the world tree for nine days to learn the meanings of the runes. The runes were symbols that grew out of a well called Urd that was regarded as the source of fate. According to legend, the Norns used these symbols to spread fate throughout the branches of Yggdrasil, the world tree.

So, we can see that the Vikings believed in rune magic. They used these runes for more than just writing and reading. Runes were meant to be much more powerful and with greater meaning than just some written characters.

These symbols not only served as writing but also to read fortunes, cast spells, and give protection, as well as communicate between Vikings themselves during a raid! The fact that we can decipher meanings even now is a testament to their ingenuity and it’s wonderful that these ancient examples of Nordic history have been preserved for us all to see.
