German Chancellor Angela Merkel has,.. for the first time,... said that she supports changing the law to make it easier to deport migrants that break the law.
Her announcement came after the authorities said more than half of those suspected of involvement in a wave of violence and sex attacks in Cologne on New Year's Eve were asylum seekers.
Under current German laws, asylum seekers are only deported if they have been sentenced to at least three years behind bars.
The chief of police in Cologne, Wolfgang Albers, has been relieved of his duties due to the police's poor handling of the incident.
The anti-immigration groups have been holding a demonstration in the city on Saturday.
