This event explores the development and implications of Germany's National Security Strategy. Experts will discuss its impact on German strategic thinking, policy evolution, and whether it helps or hinders Germany in achieving its core security goals.

In June 2023, Germany released its first-ever National Security Strategy (NSS). The document was meant to codify Germany’s Zeitenwende, including many of the changes to security policy and doctrine that Germany would make in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Thomas Dörfler and Holger Janusch from the German Federal University of Applied Administrative Sciences (Intelligence Service Division) will be joined by Frank Gavin (SAIS Johns Hopkins) and Kristina Spohr (London School of Economics) to discuss how Germany’s NSS was shaped, and what the main implications are for its core security objectives. Marina Henke (Hertie School/SAIS Johns Hopkins) will chair this event, drawing from her recent publication “Germany’s National Security Strategy: Is It Helping or Hurting the Zeitenwende?”.

This event is funded by the DAAD using funds from the Federal Foreign Office (AA).
