Modal music - a musical crossroads example | Ross Daly | TEDxHeraklion

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. How can several pieces of music sound familiar and accessible to different geographical regions? Ross Daly, a real resident of the world, initiates us into the fascinating paths of modal music while making a state on the reality and importance cultural crossroads and historical interplay.

Είναι δυνατόν διαφορετικά είδη μουσικής να ακούγονται οικεία σε διαφορετικά γεωγραφική μήκη και πλάτη; Ο Ross Daly, ως γνήσιος πολίτης του κόσμου, μας εισάγει στα γοητευτικά μονοπάτια της «τροπικής μουσικής», επισημαίνοντας τη σημασία των πολιτισμικών σταυροδρομίων και των ιστορικών αλληλεπιδράσεων.

It would not be easy for Ross Daly to be categorized under a certain “national” stereotype: born in England of Irish parents, he has lived in many different countries around the world and came to the conclusion that Crete should be his residence and the place to create music. Apart from his musical talent, Ross Daly is also known for his willingness to bring people together: he founded a music workshop, the “Labyrinth”, where artists of all nationalities meet and unite magical world sounds. The workshop is located in the village of Houdetsi and has become the core of musical experimentation and seminars, a sanctuary of creativity.

O Ross Daly δύσκολα μπορεί να χωρέσει σε κάποιο ‘εθνικό’ στερεότυπο: γεννημένος στην Αγγλία από Ιρλανδούς γονείς έχει ζήσει σε πολλές, διαφορετικές γωνιές του πλανήτη, ενώ τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει επιλέξει την Κρήτη ως τόπο κατοικίας και μουσικής δημιουργίας. Γνωστός και αγαπητός επίσης με την ιδιότητα του να φέρνει ανθρώπους κοντά, ο Ross Daly έφτιαξε το μουσικό του εργαστήριο “Λαβύρινθος”, όπου καλλιτέχνες απ’ όλο τον κόσμο συναντιούνται και πλέκουν θαυμάσιους, μαγικούς ήχους-σταυροδρόμια. Το εργαστήρι στεγάζεται πλέον στο χωριό Χουδέτσι και έχει γίνει πυρήνας μουσικών πειραματισμών και σεμιναρίων, μια φωλιά δημιουργικότητας.
