Bengal, a province under British rule, was a melting pot of Hindus and Muslims, with a delicate balance of power between the two communities. The demand for a separate Muslim homeland, Pakistan, by the Muslim League, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, further exacerbated these tensions.

Direct Action Day: A Day of Horror

On August 16, 1946, the Muslim League called for a "Direct Action Day" to pressure the British government into accepting the demand for Pakistan. This day turned into a nightmare for the people of Bengal.

Sparks of Violence: Communal clashes erupted in Calcutta, with mobs armed with lethal weapons targeting members of the opposing community.
Orgy of Violence: The city descended into chaos. Killings, rape, and arson became commonplace. Thousands of people lost their lives, and countless others were displaced.
Exodus: The violence forced a massive exodus of people, with Hindus fleeing to other parts of India and Muslims seeking refuge in areas with a Muslim majority.
