This concert captures Raag Malkauns in a powerful and celebratory mood in the fetching voice of khayal and thumri exponent Indrani Mukherjee. She also presents a Mirabai bhajan and a purab-ang thumri in the end.

Mukherjee introduces Malkauns with a detailed alap. She precipitates the sombre yet brilliant persona of Malkuns highlighting the ga-Sa meend, Sa-Ma combination and gravitates towards Ma, the centripetal point of this melodic scale.

Raag Malkauns is pentatonic, which may present its initial impression as one with limited possibilities. However, all its five notes can be used as ‘nyasa swars’ or resting points, making Malkauns boldly deviant in the raga population. No other raga in Hindustani classical music is pentatonic and at the same time, widely expandable.
