In this post, we will look at Dha, a village of the brokba tribe, located in the Ladakh mountain range in the Himalayas of India. The people living here are also called the last Aryans.
Dah (also known as Dha) and Hanu are two villages of the Brokpa of the Leh District of the Indian union territory of Ladakh.Until 2010, these were the only two villages where tourists were allowed to visit out of a number of Brokpa villages.
The two villages situated in the Dha Hanu valley, also known as Aryan valley, about 163 km northwest of Leh in Ladakh. Being at a lower altitude, Dha and Hanu is warmer than Leh, allowing for the cultivation of wine-grapes and cherries as well as apricots and walnuts.
The Brokpa people of Dah Hanu are nominally Buddhist but also worship their own animist pantheon of gods. They converted to Buddhism in the mid-nineteenth century. They have an Indo-European appearance in contrast to the predominant Tibeto-Mongol inhabitants of most of Ladakh. According to popular belief, the Brokpas were part of the army of Alexander the Great and came to the region over two thousand years ago
"Some households still practice polyandry...it is the groom who pays the bride price. Women have rights of divorce."
The Brokpa (Tibetan: འབྲོག་པ་, Wylie: ’brog pa, THL: drok pa), sometimes referred to as Minaro, are a small ethnic group mostly found in the union territory of Ladakh, India around the villages of Dha and Hanu. Some of the community are also located across the Line of Control in Baltistan in the villages around Ganokh. They speak an Indo-Aryan language called Brokskat. The Brokpa are mostly Vajrayana Buddhist while some are Muslim.
What is pregnancy tourism in Leh Ladakh?
They aimed to conceive children with Brokpa men, believing in the preservation of a pure Aryan gene within this community. These women traveled to Ladakh with the specific goal of experiencing a “Ladakh pregnancy.” This was seen as a way to uphold what they perceived as a 'pure' lineage.
Just think about European women traveling to a remote hamlet in India to get impregnated by the men there. Not a movie plot, rumors say that it has happened before and may still be happening in the Brokpa community of the Dha & Hanu villages of Ladakh. And that is what the modern world calls ‘Pregnancy tourism’.
So what is so special about getting knocked up by the men in these villages. The reason tracks back to the 7th century when Alexander the Great attacked India. It is believed that when Alexander left, a lot of his soldiers stayed back in the Indus Valley. The Brokpas claim to be the descendants of Alexander’s lost army and are considered to be the only remaining pure-blood Aryans or the master race. And it is rumored that women from Europe come here in search of Brokpa men to go back home with the so-called ‘pure seed’.
Unlike the rest of Ladakh, the Brokpas exhibit Indo-Aryan features. They have light-colored eyes, high cheekbones, long hair, pale skin, and are significantly taller than the Tibetan standards.
The community lives in isolation and has set strong rules which forbid them from intermixing with outsiders by means of marriage.
The claims of Brokpas about their genetic history is a folklore which isn’t supported by any scientific proof or credible history. But still, they continue to protect it and are super proud of what they are.
