The Datejust is the ultimate watch of reference, with an instantly recognizable design and a history that dates back to 1945. It was the first mechanical wristwatch to sport an automatically changing date display when it debuted. It also featured Rolex’s innovative Waterproof Oyster case and self-winding Perpetual movement.

It was a recipe for success that has since spawned countless iterations to suit any wrist and budget. Most importantly, the Datejust boasts the exclusivity of the Rolex brand and is a dependable luxury watch with timeless style. It’s a solid investment for collectors of all experience levels.

Ref. 16234 is one of the most versatile editions of the series. It features a white metal finish pairing stainless steel with 18k white gold, also known as “White Rolesor.” It boasts the luxury of a gold Rolex for a very attractive price.

As a slightly more “modern” Rolex, ref. 16234 also sports scratch-resistant sapphire and the COSC-rated caliber 3135 Perpetual movement. At the same time, the example Ripley chose was produced from the late 1980s until around the mid-2000s and has a distinctive older-style design set featuring more tapered lugs.

Like the Datejust, the Omega Speedmaster is a historically significant watch. It made history as the first wristwatch ever worn on the Moon when it accompanied Apollo 11 astronauts to the lunar surface on July 21st, 1969.

Since then, the Speedy has risen to high esteem among space exploration and watch enthusiasts and is now available in countless design set options. Ref. 311.30.42.30.01.005 is a modern expression of the Moon Watch that effortlessly marries design elements old and new.

The dial is covered by a Hesalite crystal, not too unlike the watch that once went to the Moon. It also sports the hand-wound mechanical caliber 1861, a descendant of the movement once worn on the Moon.

Fascinating history aside, the Omega Speedmaster is an excellent first luxury watch because it has an incredibly versatile, purpose-driven aesthetic you can wear anywhere. This watch retails for just over $5k and is available in the secondary market for as low as $4,500.
