STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the official celebrations of Moscow's 859th anniversary on Saturday.
Addressing a crowd of people, Putin stressed the role of Moscow in the life Russia.
"There are no doubts that Moscow will set the pace of life for the whole country as it did in the past," he told the thousands of spectators.
"Moscow is the city heading to the future, the city which is being watched, without exaggeration, by the whole world."
The celebrations were attended by Russian Patriarch Alexey II and Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov as well as government officials and other VIP guests.
Performances were put on by the Bolshoi ballet dancers as well as other singing and dancing entertainment.
