This interview was conducted by a Caledonia high school student.

Allen Ralph Smith was born on August 14th, 1973. He served as an eye doctor in the Navy and the highest rank he achieved was that of lieutenant.

During his senior year of high school, Smith thought about joining the military but decided to go to college instead. While in school, he learned about the G.I bill and that it could help him pursue a professional career. He was already in school to be an eye doctor, so he decided to join the Navy as under the G.I bill the Navy would pay for 3 years of his schooling so long as he served for 3 years. He also thought it would be exciting and fulfilling to serve his country.

Smith is thankful for his time in the service as it helped reduce his student debt and he got to be a part of something bigger than himself. He grew up in a small town, so he is thankful that the Navy gave him an opportunity to meet new and diverse groups of people. He also learned many new skills and discovered a great pride in his country. However, he did not enjoy being told he was “property of the Navy” or having every minute of his life regulated (such as random drug testing and being told when he was allowed to go on vacation).

During his service, Smith earned the National Defense Service Award and the Navy Commendation Medal (for his contributions working at a Naval hospital working as an eye doctor).
