The Rebel Researchers report – ‘Are we being heard?’ – documents the thoughts of around 60 young people from around East London, as discovered by other young people. They found that:
• Speaking about ‘important issues’ and being heard on them were regarded as two separate agendas by young people. Often, young people were given a chance to speak about ideas, but in ways that did not empower them, or enable them to be heard at all.
• Different places enabled them to speak, but very few listened. While traditional political spheres, national and local, and youth clubs neither enabled young people to speak about nor be heard about important issues, social media and schools allowed young people to speak, but not to be heard.
• The only site that allowed young people to be heard was the family.
• Young people reported seeing “politics” as not for them, because of their age, class, gender and because they come from deprived areas.
