When I get new dyes, I dye up a 10g sample at a 1% depth of shade so I can get a feel for the dye, how easily it binds to the yarn, if it bleeds, the colour shade etc. This then leaves me with lots of 10g mini skeins. So why not experiment with over dyeing? This started as a 1% depth of shade of Strawberry Frappe fibre reactive dye from Dharma. I picked Dark Brown acid dye from DT Craft and Design to over dye it with. I wanted to keep some of the pink and didn't want the brown to overtake everything, I dyed the twisted yarn, which creates natural resists, and I used the dark brown at a 0.5% depth of shade. And since it is the summer, I decided to use the sun as the heat source and do some solar dyeing.

Depth of Shade: 1% DOS means 1g of dye per 100g of yarn. 0.5% DOS would be 0.5g of dye per 100g. Since I had 10g of yarn, I needed 0.05g of dye to make a 0.5% DOS.

Fibre reactive dyes can be used on plant based fibre and animal based fibres. Acid dyes can only be used on animal based fibres.
